selected out of sight of the Chinese and away from #ative quarter of the town. Such a statement is tantamount to saying that because the Railway is removed about three quartera of a mile from the few native houses along the Wharf and Godown Company's premisee the Chinese would not use the Railway. Now, if as the Honourable Director of Public Works points out the lots 618,to 1,140 would only let as Chinese Shops, we would on the contrary be inducing the native town to come to the Railway and would be providing an asset much more useful to us than the few European Houses which require larger accommodation.
As a fact however a glance at the map will show that
by far the biggest quarter of the Native Town in Hung Hom, and this would be directly served by the Terminus at Gascoigne
Road.
From Austin Road to Third Street Yaumati the distance
to the site under Schemes 3 & 4 is about the same as that to Teim Tea Tsui and in fact the only part of Kowloon that would be better served by Tsin Tea Tsui are the Dew native houses by the by the Wharf and Godown premises as the European houses south of Elgin Road to the west of "athan Road and south of Mody Road to the east thereof.
The above coupled with the provision of a tram line
bite to Old Kowloon would make the situation now advocated central
to any expansion. A Flag Station at the Time Ball, zx a Passenger Station near Gascoigne Road and a Station at Yau- mati would leave Kowloon exceptionally well served with
Railway facilities.
But supposing that it is not possible to avoid resumption of the lots at Tain Tas Rsui, and that they fail to let and that the position of the Station near Gascoigne Road really did prove a deterrent to the travelling public it would still be possible to revert the Scheme No.2 seeing that there would be no occupants to buy out, and no compensation to
pay
